The Phantom Detective
The Phantom Detective magazine was first published in 1933 by Better Publications with the first story titled The Emperor of Death. The identity of The Phantom Detective was wealthy playboy Richard Curtis Van Loan who took up his first case after a challenge from someone to solve the case.
The Phantom Detective ran for 170 issues over twenty years and was an enormously popular detective magazine. This 20 year run makes it the longest running single-character pulp, although The Shadow and Doc Savage outstrip it in terms of number of issues.
The first eleven issues of The Phantom Detective were written by D.L. Champion under the pseudonym G. Wayman Jones. After this the pseudonym Robert Wallace was used by a host of various authors.
